September 13-19: Ovals

Activities:

Oval Hunt:
Description:  Show a picture of an oval to your toddler.  Talk about its shape.  Take a walk around your house or outside and find ovals with your little one.  (You can even collect things that are oval as you find them)

Oval Tear Art:
Materials:  construction paper, scissors, glue
Description:  Draw on oval shape onto a piece of construction paper and cut it out.  Show the shape to your toddler and see if they can name the shape.  You and your toddler can tear small piece of different color construction paper and glue each torn piece onto the oval shape to create fun tear art.

The Shape Song:
Materials:  construction paper (purple, blue, white, red, yellow), popsicle sticks, glue
Description:  Cut out a purple cirlce, a blue square, a white triangle, a red rectangle, and a yellow oval.  Your toddler and help you glue a popsicle stick to each of these shapes.  When the glue dries.  Show each shape to your toddler and see if they can identify the shape and color.  Sing the Shape Song (words are below under Songs and Fingerplay) and hold up each shape as you sing about it.

Oval Face:
Materials:  construction paper, glue, yarn
Description:  Cut out a large oval shape (as the face), two small cirlces, one square, two triangles and one retangle.  Show these shapes to your toddler and have them idenitify each shape.  Explain to them that many faces are oval shaped.  Let your toddler glue the smaller shapes onto the oval to create a face.  They can glue yarn to the top of the oval to make hair.

Oval Leaves:
Materials:  leaves, glue, paper
Description:  Now that fall is almost here, the leaves will start falling soon.  Take your little one outside and talk about the leaves with them.  Leaves come in all different shapes and sizes.  Try to find an collect oval shaped leaves with your little one.  Bring them in and glue them to a piece of paper to make a leaf collage.  Count the leaves and talk about their colors and what ones are big and what ones are small.

Counting Ovals:
Materials:  Sidewalk Chalk
Description:  Draw 10 ovals on the sidewalk.  Write the numbers 1-10 in each oval.  Have your toddler stand in oval number 1 and jump to each oval, counting as they jump.

Textured Ovals:
Materials:  paper, scissors, glue, sand, pom-poms, aluminum foil, playdough
Description:  Cut out several ovals from paper before beginning this activity.  You and your toddler can make a variety of ovals that are each a different texture.  Spread glue all over one oval and sprinkle sand on it.  Glue pom-poms to another and pieces of aluminum foil to another.  Make one out of playdough.  When the glue dries, talk with your toddler about how each oval feels.

Oval Mobile:
Materials:  coat hanger, yarn, hole punch
Description:  As your toddler creates ovals throughout the week, punch a hole in each one and tie a piece of yarn through it.  Hang the ovals from a coat hanger.  As your child makes each new oval add it to the mobile.  Everytime an oval is added, count them and talk about their colors and size.

Lace Ovals:
Materials:  heavy paper, hole punch, shoe string
Description:  Cut a large oval out of a heavy piece of paper (cardstock would work well).  Punch holes close to the edge of the entire oval.  Your toddler can lace the oval by putting a shoe string (or a piece of yarn with tape tied around the ends) in and out of the holes.  You might want to help them get started.

Painting Eggs:
Materials:  hard boiled eggs, paint, paintbrushes
Description:  Decorating eggs isn't just for Easter!  Hardboil several eggs.  When they cool let your toddler touch the eggs and feel the oval shape in their hands.  Give your little one some paint and let them create beautifully painted eggs.  When they eggs dry you could even do an oval egg hunt!

Snacks and Recipes:

Oval Cookies:
Ingredients:  cookie dough, easter egg cookie cutter, icing, sprinkles, chocolate chips etc.
Directions:  Have your toddler help you make the cookie dough according to packaging directions and cut the dough out using the Easter egg cookie cutters.  Bake the cookies.  When the cookies cool, let your toddler decorate them using icing, sprinkles, chocolate chips etc.

Oval Sandwiches:
Materials:  bread, sandwich meat or pbj, Easter Egg cookie cutter
Description:  Allow your toddler to help you make their favorite sandwich.  Use an Easter Egg cookie cutter to cut the sandwich into a fun oval shape.  This makes lunch time much more fun!
